My concerns are with the complexities of the mind and body and how they interact. Perhaps more importantly I am searching for, and attempting to categorize and present, a ‘reality’ beyond the scientifically measurable.

I am interested in the interconnectivity of all things, a key concept of spirituality. By breaking down the interconnecting components one gets an idea of the connectivity, in a way by fragmenting I am simplifying and stating presence within a whole.

This collection of work exposes the viewer to phenomenological possibilities of existence, transformation, and being and meaning, reminding us of our subjective experiential connection to the world around us, and the problem of understanding everything from a simple naturalistic point of view.

The blurring of categories between objects necessarily involves the taking away or removing of identities from their usual placement within our understanding of them; conventional means of interpreting their properties are disrupted. Ideas that might ordinarily relate to the properties of the figure, which are central to their meaning, become distorted.  This calls our attention to, and questions our use of, accepted categories, identities and spheres of association.

Fragments of being interest me, as they represent the essence from which experience is felt and made conscious. It is enough to experience a part of, or fragment of human “being” in order to evoke experience, feeling and meaning. Even small fragments that seem to have lost their original form carry the essence and convey the felt experience of what it means to be human.

The work is influenced by artists such as Giacometti, Rodin, Picasso, Hurst, Quinn, Hrdlicka and Lothar Fischer.

Explaining that “The artist should know how to dig out the being that is within matter,” Brancusi sought to create sculptures that conveyed the true essence of his subjects, be they animals, people, or objects by concentrating on highly simplified forms free from ornamentation. While many regarded his art as abstract, the artist disagreed; he insisted on the representational nature of his works, asserting that they disclosed a fundamental, often concealed, reality.

His eyes are quickened so with grief,
He can watch a grass or leaf
Every instant grow; he can
Clearly through a flint wall see,
Or watch the startled spirit flee
From the throat of a dead man.
Across two counties he can hear
And catch your words before you speak.

By 1935 Rhine’s experiments into the unexplained powers of the mind had shown sufficient promise to justify the creation of a special unit, the Duke Parapsychology Laboratory, where under his guidance and with help of a growing team of graduate students and colleagues, a new science was born, the experimental science of parapsychology. In 1937 the Journal of Parapsychology was founded as an independent peer-reviewed professional journal to provide an outlet for reporting the findings from the Duke research as well as from other laboratories at home and abroad.

ESP cards and dice games have long since been replaced by modern techniques that allow more subtle measurements of psi, such as by looking at the physiological changes or bioenergy characteristics of psychics and healers, or by measuring the telepathic awareness of emotional targets in a simulated dream-like situation. Efforts are made to detect clues that come directly from the psi experiencers themselves, whether they are healers, intuitives, or simply ordinary people who have these extraordinary experiences.

The Rhine research centre continues research into consciousness and psychic phenomena in the 21^st century and It is a good place for all psychics out there to take a look at the important ground work and current research that goes on at Duke.  You may find it illuminating….
